The State of Goiás Military Fire Corps (CBMO) recently incorporated new Mercedes-Benz Atego 1729 models equipped with Allison 3000 Series™ transmissions into its fleet of 57 trucks. Now, more than 10% of the corporation’s vehicles feature this type of transmission.

“The models with automatic transmissions didn’t bring anything but benefits to our fleet. From now on, this item should be essential in our bids,” said Major Weder Barbosa, of Logistics Support Command/Department of Contracts Management (CAL)/(DERC).

To comply with the fire corps’ requirements, the vehicles must meet a number of technical specifications necessary to respond quickly and efficiently to emergencies—yet carry the weight of components such as hydraulic pumps, a pneumatic system for activator valves, split-shaft transmission and priming pump and on-board water storage.

Allison’s torque converter smoothly multiplies engine torque. Unlike manual or automated manual transmissions (AMTs), Allison’s Continuous Power Technology™ provides superior launch and uninterrupted engine power to the wheels for up to 35% faster acceleration and greater maneuverability.

"The demand for automatic transmissions in emergency vehicles is, among other things, due to the fact that they reduce the traffic stress and the response time to events," said Major Barbosa.

Using Allison’s fully automatic transmissions, the fire corps also realized lower maintenance costs and reduced vehicle downtime for preventative reviews. Few activities require a vehicle with as much reliability and precision of operation as those intended for firefighting or other emergency operation. Over time, it has been proven that the most suitable vehicles for this activity are those in which drivers do not need to shift gears so they can keep their attention on traffic and respond sooner to an emergency.

“The automatic transmissions should be a requirement for all trucks to be acquired hereafter, because they bring greater comfort and safety to the drivers and operators. In firefighting, they bring greater operation safety and less possibility of mistakes—for example, shifting the wrong gear to engage the gearbox to the fire pump,” said Major Barbosa.
