Chongqing Cummins new base officially put into operation

November 22, 2022, Chongqing, China, On November 18, the new base of Chongqing Cummins Engine Co., Ltd. was officially put into operation. As Cummins' first engine joint venture in China, Chongqing Cummins has played an important role in meeting the diverse needs of China's high-horsepower engine market. The completion and commissioning of the new base marks that the company has made new breakthroughs in the fields of high-horsepower advanced manufacturing and research & development.

The new base covers an area of 400 mus (equivalent to 38 standard football fields) and is built in accordance with Cummins' global advanced standards. It has many industry-leading equipment and software packages, and integrates innovative technology, advanced manufacturing system and efficient logistics system.

The new high-horsepower technology center is the only Cummins institution in China that focuses on high-horsepower engine technology research and development. The center focuses on high-horsepower engine R&D and testing, and is equipped with mechanical performance testing, emission testing, and durability testing of complete engines and parts. The bench is also equipped with a world-leading AC power dynamometer with a maximum power of 3000kW, which can convert the fuel consumed during the test into electrical energy for use in the factory and help reduce the factory's carbon emissions.

Chongqing Cummins new base has two assembly lines and one centralized sub-assembly line for the assembly of 19-liter, 38-liter and 50-liter engines. All production lines integrate digitalization, intelligence, and automation, and are constructed in accordance with Cummins high-horsepower engine production line standards. After more than a year of trial operation, the production line has fully achieved the set goals in terms of key indicators such as safety, production capacity, and quality. A total of 9 test rooms have been built in the new base, which can cover the test of 11-72 liter diesel and natural gas engines. Equipped with advanced hardware equipment and control system, it is the most advanced test bench of Cummins in the world.

The logistics system of the new base is based on the professional planning of the international logistics industry. Based on the logistics system of the original production base, combined with the production capacity of the new factory and the latest market demand, the system logic is improved and upgraded, and the storage, distribution and warehouse management are optimized to send the correct number of qualified parts to the correct production line station at the correct time node. The factory uses advanced automatic guided vehicles for material distribution, which not only reduces the labor intensity of production line employees, but also greatly improves the distribution efficiency.

Chongqing Cummins was established in 1995. It is a joint venture between Cummins and Chongqing Electromechanical Co., Ltd. with a 50:50 share ratio. It is also the only high-horsepower engine production base of Cummins in China. The application markets served include electric power, marine machinery, and construction machinery. In 2015, Chongqing Cummins announced the BFG project to build leading manufacturing and R&D capabilities, introducing new product platforms to enrich the product array. In May 2022, the shareholders announced that the cooperation between the two parties will be extended to 2040.
